Skepticisms of American Muslims about Mosque near Ground Zero

The project of Islamic mosque near the New York’s ground zero which was only a local issue has grown as a nationwide controversy. Even the American Muslims are divided into two groups those who support it and oppose the projects. Akbar Ahmed who is also a professor of Islamic Studies in American University said “Most Americans feel the 9/11 attack was like an open wound and everything which is related to Islam especially to build an Islamic center near by the ground zero would feel more like a salt poured into an open wound”

Akbar Ahmed suggested that building a church or synagogue in the same building with the Islamic center can be solution for interfaith relation so Islam would be accepted widely in U.S. the author of Standing Alone; An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam Asra Naomi even worries that the mosque can be the place for the extremist to develop rigid views regarding there’s no specific actions of the American Muslims to oppose the extremists.

A former member of terrorist group Tawfik Hamid said  that the Islamic Center can’t represents the modern and moderate Islam as long as Muslims keep their extreme practices such as stoning women for adultery, killing apostates, calling “Monkeys and Pigs” for Jews and other barbaric practices.
